Lindstrom Live @ Dissonanze 2009

DISCO

At times, paradoxes are the spark that is needed: Hans Peter Lindstrom spent the whole of the first part of his life keeping away from listening to anything that was vaguely dance. To tell the truth, even today it is much more likely to see him hanging around in the daytime, being the father of the family, rather than spending his time in a nightclub seeing in the dawn. It's funny, then, that it is precisely him that has become one of the significant names in the dance scene of the last few years, in fact one of the scene's most noble and influential cavalrymen. Maybe it is his "otherwise" attitude that has allowed him to approach his material in such a unique way: unique and personal, regardless of the fashion, musically risky, somewhere between disco, house, cosmic suggestion and countless dramatic turn of events. He is not a DJ that shows off the success of the moment, but rather a well-rounded musician for whom every show has to be, and is, an adventure.

Nomen omen? If you think that Alfred Weisberg-Roberts is the perfect name for a crazy scientist, you're right. What other way is there to define Deadelus, after all? The man who creates his own samples, creating magic boxes that seem to come out of a Science Fiction film from the 50's, a mind that is able to compress into mere seconds Burt Bacharach sounds, heavy metal, vulgar pop, genius hip hop, industrial, ragtime. A dispenser of an unstoppable vortex of ideas. In the new millennium, the prophet of patchwork as a form of art is indisputably him, with his absurd jackets and his joy in performing live.

Atom TM Live @ Dissonanze 2009

ELECTRONICA

The TM mark accompanies the Atom brand, beware: but the trade mark should simply extend itself over the whole adventurous, artistic-existential madness of Mr Uwe Schmidt. We challenge you to find another being, human or not, able to present himself, in the course of his career as a musician, as over sixty diverse identities. More than sixty? Yes, you read correctly. Always the champion of mockery, applying himself to refined Electronica as to psychedelic Lounge, attending to extreme noise as to South American rhythm. For instance: Jazz, IDM and Ambient meeting in an Chilean wine bar, or in a Mexican tavern. The result is exultant. The result is unpredictable. The result is AtomTM.

To be twenty two years old. To find oneself studying cello and composition by day, at one of the most prestigious English schools: the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and then to embrace the night by throwing oneself into most sordid mix of jam sessions, to the beat of grime, gripping the microphone and belting out rhymes and verses invented in the moment. Then, being able to count on the most illustrious of mentors: Matthew Herbert. In short: to find two friends, The Shapes, with whom to create a jewel of an album (literally too: the title is "Jewellery") that is immediately produced by Rough Trade, the label which is the real and authentic story of Indie Rock. This, ladies and gentlemen, is Mica and Levi, in Micachu art.

Timo Maas Live @ Dissonanze 2009

TECHNO

  1:59:16

Timo has seen everything. He has walked down the most dangerous roads. He has been courted by the star system (discs for majors, collaborations with Kelis and Brian Molko, sound tracks for video games), he has been called on many times to be the resident techno-house DJ for applauding masses, and has risked, several times, being tarred with the wrong brush. Timo Maas is, first and foremost, a great DJ. Having said that, he is a person who truly loves music. He has had the ability to create sets and dancefloor anthems so madly moving as to want throw them into the cheap and triumphal mainstream. But Timo is cut from a different cloth. He is a wizard of taste, holding the balance between tightly shut rhythms and airy openings. Timo is Timo. Luckily.

They come from Michigan. Haughty. Inaccessible. Rationing the information about themselves. A few photos, some nocturnal film clips, just about nothing else. They scorn the reigning culture of download: their creations are only available on vinyl, limited edition, at least for now, and if they are sold out quickly: tough luck. But at the end of the day, what counts is the music: the trio gives life to a disturbing and fascinating combination of raw electronica and dark suggestion, in a sound spectrum that ranges from Throbbing Gristle to hints of dubstep. The word is out. Magazines like Fact have nominated them as idols. No surprise if the same is claimed by those who come to see their set at Dissonanze.
