Club Wahoo! with the Leftside Ensemble DJs
The Leftside Ensemble of Helsinki is a collective of passionate Djs from Finland, at the moment consisting of Sampsa Vilhunen, Vesa Yli-Pelkonen and Antti Eerikainen. The posse was put together by Sampsa Vilhunen in 1999 after years of serious record collecting and less serious djing with his soul mates. The Leftside Ensemble DJs are best known for their Wahoo! club night, which they successfully run in Umo Jazz House, Helsinki, Finland, from 2001 to 2007 and in Redrum from 2007 to 2008. In the autumn of 2008 Wahoo! moved to a new venue called Kuudes Linja and celebrated the start of it's 8th year there!
All the Leftside Ensemble guys come from different histories in music, which probably makes their Dj sets so versatile and tasty. While some of them hail from strong hip hop and disco background, others have been strongly tied up to all things jazz and latin, or having history in mod culture and northern soul. At the present day, the broad musical spectrum of Leftside Ensemble DJs thus ranges from dancefloor jazz, Brazilian funk and banging 60's soul steppers to contemporary eclectic dance beats and left-of-centre hip hop. While many club nights promise versatility in music on paper, these guys are naturals in really fulfilling those expectations – with all the right records.
In addition to the quality selection of wide range of music styles, Wahoo! has become an acknowledged club night for its superb crowd, relaxed atmosphere and fierce dancing tradition. During the years Wahoo! menu has included many top Djs and live acts of the scene. Wahoo! has also hosted great Helsinki ! Soul all-nighters with massive line-ups of best of the British and Fennoscandian soul and funk Djs. One of the Wahoo! crew, Dj Antti Eerikäinen, is also known as the head of Helsinki based Ricky-Tick Records that is a home for great artists like the Five Corners Quintet, Jukka Eskola Quintet, Dalindeo and Timo Lassy.
At Samurai FM the Wahoo! guys are letting it all loose, mixing up all styles necessary and unnecessary and taking a long glance to the known and unknown jewels in the past and present history of black music.
The famous Wahoo! posters have been designed mainly by Wayne Pate (Brooklyn, NYC), an inseparable part of Wahoo! concept. Wayne Pate, formerly best known of his Soul Rebel designs, now has a new design studio GoodShapeDesign.
